Over the past year and a half I have been working with Anya Saffir on a musical version of the children's book, The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. Today, we had our first public reading of it at Atlantic Theater Company and it couldn't have gone better.
Our version of the show retells the story of the rabbit almost completely in song. There is a ton of vocal arrangements and harmonies throughout and the show depends on the ensemble to play and sing all the music.
We had an extremely limited amount of time to put the show up-luckily we had an amazing cast that consisted of: Jessika Doyle (The Rabbit), Mike Piazza (The Skin Horse), Wes Zurick (The Boy), Jacqueline Landgraf (The Nurse), Sydney Sainte, Stephanie A. Hsu, Eric Williams, Dan Jones, Tricia Fukuhara, Ben Katz and Ian Young. I also brought in piano player and Musical Director, Scott Stein to help musical direct, teach and accompany.
As of now, The Veleveteen Rabbit is going to be produced at Atlantic Theater Company in Fall 2015. In the meantime, we are looking for other outlets for the project (regional theater and touring companies).
